An electrical resistivity method for groundwater investigation using vertical electrical sounding technique was carried out in parts of Old Aguata and Anaocha Local Government Areas. The investigation is aimed at delineating the aquiferous units within the study area by determining their depths, thicknesses, resistivities and the potential borehole depths. The geology revealed that Nanka Sand and Imo Shale outcropped in the area. Twelve vertical electrical soundings using the Schlumberger configuration was carried out within the towns. The data were interpreted using computer software (one dimensional interpex version 3). Three to six geo-electric layers were identified from the interpretation of vertical electrical sounding curves. The saturated layers of the geo-electric units have resistivity values ranging from 687.17 -m to 3642.0 -m at depths to bottom ranging from 78.23m to 110.0m respectively. One can infer that the aquifers encountered in the area were mainly unconfined aquifers and two confined aquifers: Agulu2 VES11 and Awgbu VES12. From the study, it is recommended that boreholes be drilled much beyond the depth range of 24.8m to 130.0m which represent the range of watertable in the study area, to harness potable water within the aquifer region. The watertable map of the area shows that groundwater flow is mainly in the NW–SE direction. It was observed that the hydraulic conductivity obtained ranges from 0.00066 to 0.0015m/day while the transmissivity range is from 0.016 to 0.088 m2/day within the study area and these were seen to compare favorably with the results of previous studies in the area.
