African writers do not stand aloof to the quest to find solution to the crisis of leadership which bedevils the continent. Their works are geared towards discovering lasting solutions to the crisis. Hinging on selected works of Chinua Achebe, Ngugi Wa Thiong’O and Ayi Kwei Armah, this study is primarily inspired by the quest to locate why the problems of Africa, especially in terms of leadership, have persisted for so long. The works under consideration, Ayi Kwei Armah’s The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born, Ngugi Wa Thiong’O’s, Devil on the Cross, and Achebe’s A Man of the People, are envisaged by the authors to be social critiques of the African condition. They capture the incidence of political corruption and decay that are the hallmark of leadership in the post independence Africa. Through exposition of the malpractices that characterize postindependence leadership in Africa, the authors agree that the quest for African development remains a mirage as a result of poor leadership. Consequently, this study seeks to analyze the works under consideration in order to find solutions to the problems of leadership in the continent. In order to achieve this, the research adopts the analytic method. It x-rays the various factors which contributed to the crisis of the continent. Thus, through careful analysis of the selected novels of the selected authors the study discovers that the African crisis is the effect of colonial experience which the African continent underwent in the 19th and 20th centuries. This colonial experience is the cause of mediocrity exhibited by the political leadership in Africa. Finally, the work suggests ways of extricating the continent from this seemingly unending and intractable crisis.
