THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL IMPACT OF UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA ON ITS HOST COMMUNITIES (NSUKKA, ORBA AND OBUKPA), 1960-2008

The project is a modest attempt to study the Social, Political and Economic Impact of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) on Her Host Communities namely Nsukka, Orba and Obukpa from 1960 – 2008; employing historical methods involving oral and written sources including archival sources. The study examined issues trends and result of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka’s presence on her host communities. It was discovered that the location of the university had inspired the host communities to go to school a such, benefit more than any other part of Nsukka in terms of infrastructure, political as well as economic. In addition, the exposure meted out the constant contact with the foreigners has helped to sharpen and change the socio-economic and political orientation of Nsukka man. In all, without the university, there would be no Nsukka. Above all, the researcher regards his undertaking of writing this work as the right time to tell the story of UNN and take stock of the events – growth and developments during the period.
