Man naturally is a being with others. The ‘with’ here expresses a genuine pluralism with communion. Among many critical thinkers, it is an uncontroverted fact that man is a being with others. However, the controversy among those thinkers whose ontology of man is conceived as a “being-with” is the understanding, and appreciation of this ‘the-other’. For people like Thomas Hobbes, the other is a ‘homo homini lupus’ (man is a wolf to man). For Machiavelli, the other must be totally crushed. These conceptions made the ‘other to be perceived as an object towards another’s end. This indeed destroys interpersonal relationship. Gabriel Marcel mediated in this controversy by proferring intersubjectivity as a value which will enhance human dignity and interpersonal relationship. In this work therefore we intend to study Gabriel Marcel’s notion of intersubjectivity as a way to correct the subject-object perception of those existentialists who see the other as an object. We further go beyond Marcel’s perception of intersubjectivity as a value to intersubjectivity as a nature of being. Our method will be analytical.
