I was shocked and completely dislodged when I got the sad news of the demise of our pioneer Vice-Chancellor (Prof. Festus Aghagbo Nwako). He was the serving Vice-Chancellor when I joined the University and I had the privilege of attending Senate Meetings and other Committee Meetings chaired by him.
He was a scholar, pragmatic University administrator, and an accomplished medical professional. Above all and more importantly, Emeritus Professor Festus Aghagbo Nwako was a very good christian. He believed so much in practical Christianity and demonstrated it within the period of his Vice-Chancellorship and thereafter.
Nwako was the Vice-Chancellor when the financial allocation to the University was not even sufficient to pay salaries yet he achieved so much. He was a very good manager of material and human resources. He built the University out of almost nothing. he will be remembered for his character, honesty, integrity and commitment to God (through charity).
To the family of Emeritus Professor Festus Aghagbo Nwako, your consolation is on the good life which your father lived. He was a good Christian and I have no doubt that he is resting in the bosom of the Lord as he has departed in body to be present with the Lord. For to live is Christ and to die is gain (Philippians 1:21).
Obata Obie, rest peacefully in the bosom of the Lord. Adieu Emeritus Prof. Festus Aghagbo Nwako.
