Tradition and scholars (Leonard 1906, Onwuejogwu 1976, Afigbo 1981 etc) have extolled the prime place occupied by Nri in Igbo Cosmology. Efforts have been made mainly from historical perspective to throw more light on Nri hegemony. However, investigations so far carried out on Nri, while shedding more light on Igbo history have left a lot of unanswered questions. Some prejudiced writings of Colonial officers have only served to add to the Confusion. Results from Archeologic al studies on Nri would put in perspective the history of Nri in particular and Igbo land in general. Examining archaeological investigations aimed at shedding more light on the place of Nri in Igbo history is the thrust of this paper. Attempt will also be made to highlight the constraints militating against the effective conduct of more archaeological investigation at Nri. Efforts will also be made to ascertain how far the archaeological investigations disprove or conform to historical reports on Nri.
