ASSESSMENT OF ICT COMPETENCIES POSSESSED BY POLYTECHNIC OTM LECTURERSIN SOUTH-SOUTH GEO-POLITICAL ZONE OF NIGERIA

The study was designed to find out the areas of strengths and weaknesses of polytechnic OTM lecturers in south-south geo-political zone of Nigeria with respect to ICT competencies. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. Six research questions were draw to answer the research questions, while four null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The entire population of the 70 OTM lecturers in the five polytechnics were used for the study. Data were collected for the study through the administration of validated questionnaire on the respondents. The split-half method was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. The mean statistics and standard deviations were used to answer the research questions while t-test statistic was used to test the hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed that polytechnic OTM lecturers in south-south geo-political zone of Nigeria considered themselves competent in word processing, electronic spreadsheet application and power point presentation. However, they considered themselves fairly competent in database management system, desktop publishing and webpage design. Theconclusions drawn wereand implications of the findings pointed up. Relevant recommendations were made towards improving OTM lecturers’ level of competence in ICT which include establishment of ICT training centres in polytechnics in the south-south states and reviewing of university business education curriculum in line with the ICT innovations in OTM programme.
