PHYTOCHEMICAL AND ANTI MICROBIAL ANALYSIS OF URENA LOBATA LEAF AND ROOT

Phytochemical analysis and anti-microbial analysis was carried out on the leaf and the root of Urena lobata. The Harbone method of extraction was used in the extraction. The crude extracts were separated using TLC. Result of the phytochemical screening showed the presence of saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids, and tannins. The result of the anti-microbial analysis showed that only the chloroform extracts of the root and leaf of Urena lobata were active on the test organisms. The test organisms were: fungi- Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Candida albican; Bacteria ; S. aureus, E. coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, Proteus vulgaris, Streptococcus species, Bacillus species, Pseudomonas pyocyania, Klebsiella aerogenes. Enterobacter aerogenes had the highest average diameter of zone of inhibition for both chloroform leaf and root extracts with diameters of 38mm and 36mmrespectively among the bacterial while Aspergillus flavus had the least average diameter of zone of inhibition for both chloroform leaf and root extracts with diameters of 14mm and 12mm respectively. From the GC-MS, UV-VISIBLE, 1H and 13C NMR, and FTIR results, the suggested compound present in -the chloroform leaf extract was 1,2-Benzendicarboxylic acid, monobutyl ester (C12H14O4). The suggested compound for chloroform root was Phthalic acid; dibutylglycolate (C18H24O6).The suggested compound in ethyl acetate extract of the root was 1, 2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, 2-methylpropyl, 3-methylbutyl ester. (C17H24O4).
