AN APPRAISAL OF INTERNET ADVERTISING BY MANUFACTURERS IN ONITHSA NORTH AND SOUTH L.G.AS

This study examined the extent of use of Internet Advertising activities in Onitsha North and South L.G.A.s. The study was anchored on the theoretical framework of technological determinism theory. The following research questions guided the study. Do manufacturers use Internet Advertising in Onitsha North and South L.G.A.s? To what extent do manufacturers in Onitsha use Internet Advertising? What problems if any do they encounter in the use of Internet Advertising? To what extent do they prefer Internet Advertising to mainstream advertising? Survey method was used in conduction the research. Two hundred copies of questionnaire were administered to personnel in the companies in Onitsha North and South L.G.A.s, one hundred questionnaire were distributed in each of the L.G.A.s. In analyzing the data, social science statistical package (SPSS) and chi square statistical tool were used. The study discovered that Internet Advertising is being used but in a low level. The study found out that many of the respondents have personal computers, browse in the Cyber café but majority of them don’t have website, they don’t advertise on the Internet. Probably they use the Internet for some other thing. The study also found that although majority of the respondents do not advertise through the Internet, majority of them who advertise through the Internet say that their website and Internet Advertising attract customers for them regularly. The research findings further revealed the problems militating against effective Internet Advertising, they are: lack of constant power supply, illiteracy, poor signals/network failures and financial constraints. Based on these findings, the study recommends that people must be empowered to have ready and affordable access to the Internet technology. Internet Service Providers should improve in their networks so that people will be encouraged to advertise through the Internet. Also the federal and state government should take necessary steps to ensure regular power supply to facilitate the use of Internet Advertising.
