AUTHOR: PROF. F. O. OKAFOR

FROM AFRICAN BANKING AND FINANCE REVIEW VOL. 1 NO.2 APRIL 2011

PUBLISHED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF BANKING AND FINANCE, NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY, AWKA.

Financial Sytem Reform (FSR) is a widely adopted and often abused instrument of national economic management especially in developing countries. Since modern economies are financial sector driven, sustainable economic growth and stability cannot be achieved without a robust and stable financial sector. Major programmes of economic restructuring would obviously call for adjustments in the financial services delivery process. Though the goals ol FSR seem similar across nations there are obvious differences in strategies and approaches to reforms adopted by individual countries. The paper identifies the major FSR episodes in Nigeria in the last century. The projected impact and success rating of key reforms episodes are evaluated while the policy gaps and failures are identified. Best option approaches for optimizing the gains of future FSR initiatives are recommended.
