This paper is based on experience garnered as a library and information professional (LIP) that has worked in a traditional automated and presently the digital library systems. It is an indication that library operations and services in Nigeria have evolved from traditional through automated to the present digital library process, each with well defined input, process, output and feedback/ control elements. Due to the heavy technology requirement of the digital library system, staff competencies are needed in the areas of technical knowledge, library-related competencies and special management competencies.Acquisition of these skills is challenged by ideological and environmental issues. However, attainment of digital library level of development is rooted on skilled staff. Library scientists, their employers and professional associations have enormous responsibilities to ensure lifelong learning, change of attitude, review of programmes and facilities, as well as collaboration with computer related technologies experts which are strategies needed for digital library skills acquisition.
