PERSPECTIVE ON FOOD RETAILING DEVELOPMENT IMPLICATIONS FOR INDUSTRIES IN NIGERIA

This research work closely examines the perspectives on food retailing
development to its implications for industries in Nigeria. The major objective of this work was to examine the state of food retailing technology in Nigeria industries and ascertain the implications of the evolutionary paths in food retailing technologies among Nigerian industries. Literature on related information sources using journals, through internet, textbooks and other periodicals were reviewed. A descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population comprised all the managers/assistant and customers that patronizes retail outlet shops in Awka and Onitsha cities of Anambra State, while the sample consists of two hundred and seventy six (276) respondents made up of one hundred and eighty (180) managers/assistant and ninety-six (96) customers in both Awka and Onitsha. Quota and Judgemental sampling techniques were used in selecting the samples, while mean, and standard deviation were used in analyzing the data collected for the study. Findings from the analysis showed that the existing food retailing technologies are videotext services, smart operations, Electronic data interchange (EDI), scanners, interactive television system hypermarkets, television homes, shopping, vending machines, radio frequency identification etc. Findings further showed that poor communication network, unstable power supply and in adequate security system are some of the problems that hampers food retailing technologies in Anambra State. The study therefore, recommended that government should provide adequate/stable power supply so as to boost the full application of modern retail technologies and that consumers should be exposed to various forms of modern retailing technologies efficient and better patronage.
