FROM: THE DIGNITY OF A FRENCH TEACHER: CELEBRATING PROF. JULIE AGBASIERE

Women are increasingly overcoming age-long barriers to become successful in their different professions. Consequently, the impact of their contributions is being felt more in their families as well as in the larger society. In Nigeria, the number of female ministers has continued to appreciate, with women serving in such sensitive ministries as Aviation, Finance and Petroleum. In academics, the number of female professors has equally appreciated. In the Faculty of Arts, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, there are currently nine female professors with six of them having become professors in the past three years. The retirement of Professor Julie Agbasiere and the production of this Festschrift once again, present an opportunity to look at the lives of career women in general and attempt providing answers to some pertinent questions – How fulfilled, how happy, how celebrated, how appreciated are African career women. Do they face peculiar challenges different from other career women from other parts of the globe?
