Between Sesame Square and the Classroom Dramatics: An Effective Approach to Teaching and Learning

Learning becomes most effective when you allow the learner to engage several senses such as hearing, seeing, touching, smelling and tasting. This research set out to determine the impact of using multimedia approach and classroom dramatics to teaching/learning. The basic aim of the work is to use multimedia for the emancipation of development of pupil’s right and in other to have a more humanistic approach in teaching and learning The study group consists of two groups; pupils in basic four attending Geojul Montessori School and ECWA Model School in Port Harcourt were used. The random sampling technique was used to form the experimental group who were taught using the multimedia that is using electronic media such as television, computer and other multimedia devices while the control group was also taught using classroom dramatics such as role-playing, dancing, singing etc. In the research, a 14 weeks field work was carried out where children participated in role-playing, speech rendition, dance-drama and games. Some selected episodes of Sesame square an educational TV. Programme designed for children were also used
to determine the medium that is most effective. Both groups participated in the pre-test and post test. Data analysis demonstrates a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in understanding of the various subjects. This study found out that teaching/learning is best facilitated through the use of multi-media instead of a single routine type of medium. The application of a multimedia approach to teaching/learning improved children’s creativity, analytical thinking and exposed them to the use of information and communication Technology
(ICT). It also improved children’s performances in schools and beyond. The study thereby advocates that multimedia approach should be used in the classroom as its pedagogical implication has been proved by professionals in the field of education to be highly interactive, motivating and fascinating and has also overcome the barriers of time and space and provides evidence to be accepted as an anytime and anywhere tool for educating multi-disciplinary
