TRIBUTE TO PROF. FESTUS NWAKO, EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF SURGERY, A TEACHER/SURGEON PAR EXCELLENCE BY PROF. J. I. IKECHEBELU

March 5, 2014

The entire staff and students of the Faculty of Medicine were all in shock and disbelief on hearing the breaking news of your death. We would have wished you stayed on…… if wishes were horses….. but we bow to the will of Almighty God who has called you home in peace.

We cannot capture all you mean to us in words, however, Obata Obie as he is commonly known will be remembered for his

  • Indefatigably in training and pursuit of excellence
  • Persistence in molding positive characters
  • Unparalleled commitment and dedication to the teaching and practice of medicine.
  • Master class status as a researcher.
  • Extraordinary ability to turn “goats” into great physicians and surgeons
  • Excellent and transformative administrative skills.
  • Charity

Your death is like the fall of an institution, the eclipse of an era but we are consoled in your own words that your ‘goats’ who have become ‘humans’ will keep the flame aglow. Rest in peace our exemplary mentor.

Prof. Joseph I. Ikechebelu

Dean of Medicine

TRIBUTE TO EMERITUS PROFESSOR FRSTUS AGHAGBO NWAKO BY PROF. GREG NWAKOBY

March 5, 2014

I was shocked and completely dislodged when I got the sad news of the demise of our pioneer Vice-Chancellor (Prof. Festus Aghagbo Nwako). He was the serving Vice-Chancellor when  I joined the University and I had the privilege of attending Senate Meetings and other Committee Meetings chaired by him.

He was a scholar, pragmatic University administrator, and an accomplished medical professional. Above all and more importantly, Emeritus Professor Festus Aghagbo Nwako was a very good christian. He believed so much in practical Christianity and demonstrated it within the period of his Vice-Chancellorship and thereafter.

Nwako was the Vice-Chancellor when the financial allocation to the University was not even sufficient to pay salaries yet he achieved so much. He was a very good manager of material and human resources. He built the University out of almost nothing. he will be remembered for his character, honesty, integrity and commitment to God (through charity).

To the family of Emeritus Professor Festus Aghagbo Nwako, your consolation is on the good life which your father lived. He was a good Christian and I have no doubt that he is resting in the bosom of the Lord as he has departed in body to be present with the Lord. For  to live is Christ and to die is gain (Philippians 1:21).

Obata Obie, rest peacefully in the bosom of the Lord. Adieu Emeritus Prof. Festus Aghagbo Nwako.
