Apparently, religion, at once, fosters peace and incites hatred among its adherents. It undoubtedly has important and vital functions in society. It is known to be a fountain of inspiration to its adherents and a source of cohesion to social groups. Many look up to it as a guarantee of peace, unity and harmonious co-existence, especially in societies with diverse peoples and cultures. At the same time, in such pluralistic societies, religion has also been used to promote division, conflict, prejudice, discrimination, persecution, and, In a word, intolerance. This work focuses on religious intolerance in a pluralistic society, with Nigeria as a case in point. Taking the sociological approach and the case study method of research, it explores and describes the situation in Nigeria, as; it affects the three major religions in Nigeria, namely Islam, Christianity and African Traditional Religion. The objective is to bring out some of the internally generated factors responsible for religious intolerance, and to proffer some way out of this socio-religious malaise which has dogged every step of religious freedom in Nigeria.
