Construction is known to be a very important but hazardous activity, therefore making safety precaution an imperative for the efficient realization of its noble objectives. This study examined the factors which pose danger to the health and safety of workmen at the construction sites in Enugu metropolis and provides solution on how to avoid or reduce them. The research identified and analyzed hazards and their causes, determined the consequences of hazards with particular reference to the safety of workmen, prescribed control standard and procedures and made recommendations on how to avoid or reduce the causes of hazard. The research was a descriptive survey design and the sampling technique used was stratified random sampling method. Data were collected from the secretariats of the different professional bodies involved in building production in Enugu metropolis and the 3 local government areas that made up Enugu metropolis. The sample size for the questionnaire survey of the professional bodies was 72 while the total number of building construction works being done by the 3 local government for visual observation was 16. A total number of 59 questionnaires out of 72 were returned which represents approximately 82% of the sample size. The collected data were statistically analyzed with the use of frequency distribution, percentages, bar-charts and the chisquare was used to test the postulated hypothesis. The data analyses revealed that majority of the respondents were males, married and are between the ages of 40 and above. All the respondents from the various professional bodies are licensed to practice and they are educated up to the tertiary institution and majority of them have over 10years of work experience in construction. The findings of this study revealed that Construction hazard/accident has negative effect on the moral of the workmen, the construction workers in Enugu metropolis rarely use the personal protective equipment and construction client in Enugu metropolis rarely engage the services of construction professionals in construction work. It further revealed that no construction site is accident free, and it also made known that accident don’t just happen, they are caused and the issue of safety should be everybody’s concern. Parts of the recommendations made were that every building construction company should have a safety department and employ trained safety officer to train her workers on safety and supervise them at work, safety program should be included as part of management project planning, danger signs should always be displayed at hazardous areas on site, workers should not be allowed to work under the influence of alcohol and accident statistics should always be displayed.
