This dissertation presents the design and implementation of an energy efficient Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) platform for the remote monitoring of temperature and carbon monoxide in an indoor cooking environment. The design and implementation of the duty-cycle WSN platform is described including the hardware, firmware and operating system, the architecture and implementation of software for sensor data storage and visualisation. Object oriented analysis and design (OOAD) was used to develop an efficient database system which manages and query data obtained via sensor nodes. Faulty node detection and localization was also realized, this was achieved by coming up with an algorithm that logically considers the receive signal strength value of -100 dbm as threshold, the result from the C – Sharp plot shows that the Sensor nodes were able to capture temperature range of between 250C to 510C while the result for the CO emission shows an interval of 0.01g/m3 to 30.0 g/m3. A comparison between data transmitted at source and data received at the destination (sink) was carried out , a ranking test was used to validate the data received, a 0.9325 correlation value was obtained which shows a high level of integrity of 93.25%, and also considering an inter Sensor node distance between source and sink as 40 metres. An analysis of the battery Ampere hour consumption was carried out with a view to seeking ways of enhancing Battery life. When fully charged the Nokia BL-5CB Battery has an ampere hour value of 1027 mAH, when subjected to sleep and active mode for 24 hours. The ampere hour value of the battery fell to 998 mAH for source node and 900 for mAH for intermediate nodes.
