Performing arts centre is a place of entertainment, where actors perform live music, dance, drama, etc. to an audience on stage. A major research consideration is on blending Igbo cultural symbolism with contemporary architecture. The research was necessitated because of the increasing absence of cultural undertone/considerations and its symbols in our national architectural designs, thereby speaking less of the people’s culture and values. This research seeks to integrate cultural symbols and forms with modern day architectural character of performing arts centres, in order to produce an indigenous performing arts centre that speaks well of Igbo race. Analysis of Igbo culture and its development forms the background for the research, and then deriving its basic symbols and their basic building forms from the ancient times. The final outcome will be obvious; a performing arts center that is indigenous and also reflects the culture of Igbo people.

Housing is one of the basic human needs, apart from food and clothing. The increasing number of postgraduate students in tertiary institutions, Nnamdi Azikiwe University in particular, has raised accommodation problems. Establishment of off-campus private hostels was initially perceived as a solution but property owners have taken advantage of the high demand to increase rents. Students and parents are reeling under this financial burden. This has equally become a University management concern. Subsequently, the current trend of fire in hostel buildings has become a concern in our society today. There has been a lot of incidence of fire in hostels, where student has lost their lives and valuable properties. These issues need to be reconciled with the building codes, fire safety design and cost constraints of the project. Consequently, this dissertation tends to identify the problems and attitudes associated with fire in hostel buildings and proffer solution through design approach that will help to prevent ignition of fire, limit spread, minimize damage and maximize life safety of the occupants and for the firefighters.

Lagos State, the commercial nerve-center of the nation has over the years been confronted with the problem of rapid growing human and vehicular traffic congestion. This problem is largely caused by the rate of migration of people into Lagos State. Infact recent statistics has it that over 15000 people enter Lagos on a daily basis. This figure results to an estimated six million people that move around Lagos metropoly on a daily basis. This geometric increase in population of people in Lagos State as against a rather static infrastructure (road network) development has resulted to a multiplicity of transportation problems in several parts of Lagos State one of which is Amuwo-odofin. Amuwo-odofin with estimated population of over 2 million is not just affected by transportation problem but also by poor transportation induced problems such as poverty and retarded economic development. Fortunately, Amuwo-odofin as well as majority of Lagos suburbs is blessed with one viable source of economic development especially in the transportation sector; water. This thesis therefore is intended to examine the present situation of inland water transportation system in Lagos State (with special focus on Amuwo-odofin town) as it relates terminals, and there after proffer architectural design solutions to the zoning and circulation problems associated with them. Chapter one is the introduction of the topic in a broad spectrum, Chapter two goes on to explain the theoretical framework of the proposed scheme, with emphasis on its need and viability. Chapter three focuses on port terminal planning principles. Chapter four will deal on Site study which includes climatic and topographical analysis of the proposed site for the project will be treated . in chapter five, the design synthesis and concept will be treated.

A mortality and disease-free society has remained a challenge and aspiration of every nation. This need is by improving the health quality of citizens through the provision of quality facilities and healthcare personnel. Quality personnel are only achievable through quality education. Nigeria is also engaged in this crusade of promoting healthcare for its teeming population. At present, the problems are many, especially in the training of the required personnel. The apparent general decline in the number and quality of those in the nursing and midwifery professions, traceable to inadequate schools, is detrimental to the healthcare needs of the society. Most existing institutions lack basic infrastructural facilities and human resources. The Department of Nursing, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, is no exception. The crusade for quality healthcare and education cannot be successful without the provision of quality schools for the training of personnel. Such schools must be conducive and spatially comfortable for learning purposes. It has been discovered that environmental quality is a big factor of learning and architecture plays a leading role in the creation of such environments. The design for the School of Nursing, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi, aims at achieving effective use of Passive Ventilation in creating this conducive learning environment. To achieve this, the study looked into the evolution and challenges of nursing profession; the passive ventilation concepts and design strategies. It undertook case studies of existing schools and came to the realization that cross and stack effect systems, with the aid of wind catcher and proper fenestration are effective tools of natural passive ventilation. These deductions were applied to this project and the result is a school design conducive and appropriate for learning.
